Academic discourse refers to the language of education being used within the classroom. Regarding the art world, many artists have been said to talk with “art speak.” In other words, those artists are speaking with terms and words only spoken from artist to artist. These are words not used outside of a discussion on art. The use of academic discourse in an art classroom demonstrates understanding of art material, vocabulary, and concepts. It is important that students learn to use “art speak” appropriately because it will help them understand art as a whole. Strategies below can help foster academic discourse in the art classroom.
Accountable "Art Speak"
Printing out the attached file on heavy paper and giving each pair of students one folded version of the file will allow students to engage in verbal art critiques in small groups or pairs. This fosters academic discourse in a non-intimidating way and they can keep the handout to remember how to phrase art statements in the future.

Paint Palette Partners For Think-Pair-Share
This is an art-specific partner finding plan to engage in Think-Pair-Share. Each student will color in their palettes with the correct color and then go around a find a partner to be their "green" partner. Both students involved must have "green" available to be each other's "green" partner. This will be a quick partner finder for the first few months and every two months or so, depending on the size of the class we can do a new palette with more advanced colors (indigo, raw sienna, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, etc.) and new partners!

Supply Cabinet Groups
In this adopted exercise, the students would be solidifying art terms or learning new art terms. I would have the new art terms without definitions on a projector or whiteboard for students to think about. Each group of students is responsible for helping each other get the right answers. I could use this exercise by having students use terms in a complete sentence, define the terms, give an example of a term, or all of the above. It is a way for the terms to be learned and memorized in a fun way.

Art Interview
At the end of a project each student will be pair up with another student to interview each other as if they were all famous artists. For a high school advanced class this may turn into a paper, but for junior high and underclassmen, this form could be filled out to satisfy engagement in academic discourse.

Swat It!
This is game oriented, kinetic exercise to get students thinking and cheering. In this exercise, students are thinking about vocabulary and hearing the words described or defined and must think about which word it belongs to. Once they've figured it out, they must use it in a descriptive sentence or find a work of art around the classroom that exemplifies the art term.
