Anticipatory sets are designed to do three things: Focus Learning, Prepare Brains, and to capture the interest of students. These are activities that generally engage students at the beginning of a new lesson or unit. They are important to grab students' attention with lesson-specific information. Anticipatory sets fall on the teachers to come up with but should be getting students excited and ready to learn what the lesson holds for them. It is also a gentle way to begin a new class and for secondary students it shifts their brains from Math in period one to Art in period two!

K-W-L Sheet
This sheet is meant to engage students immediately into thinking about what they already know about a specific topic. In this case, the new unit or lesson is to discuss "What is Contemporary Art?" Assuring students that there is no right answer will relax the students into not fearing bring "wrong." The goal is to get students to see what they already know (wow! so smart!) and for them to think critically about what the want to know. It's a simple sheet to modify and I have seen it used affectively when I was in grade school.

Video/PowerPoint/Prezi
Technology is a great way to engage students. Living in a culture with Youtube, TedTalk, and so many other resourceful videos it is easy to teach students information in humorous and intriguing ways. Below are three links to interesting videos. Another fun video idea is to play a song or a music video and have the students look for the elements of art in the music video or dance piece. This would need to be altered to fit the lesson, but is another way to engage multiple senses. 3-D Art Three Primary Colors Better Ideas |

Thinking Quotes
Starting the class off with the assignment to think about a presented quote and answer a question about it is a good way to calm students down after coming into class from another subject and focus them on art. This is also a good way open the students up to different people's perspectives if I am sure to quote females and males, Sudanese and Japanese, artist and scientist (etc.). An example of a book that has numerous prompts and deep questions is Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon. Below is a document of 20 quotes from a diverse group of people I could share and use in my classroom.

Shock Visitor
This idea can only me implemented from time to time and I think I'd only use it when I was in deperate need to re-juice my students. This anticipatory set would involve a class visitor to get the attention of students. Depending on what I wanted to teach that day I would have an enthusiastic artists come screaming in (to discuss why art is so important); Or a protestor with a propaganda poster (to discuss marketing and media). I liked this idea because it shocks students and captures their interest while preparing the brains to think about what they'll be learning that class or week.

Quick Sketch
This is an anticipatory set I've thought up on my own that involves the student creating a "mini-art-piece." Sometimes the students would listen to music and draw as they listen (never lifting the pen). Other times I might say, "you have 3 minutes to create a Fauvist work of art" or "art that exemplifies cubism" before they even learn what it is. This gets students doing something with their hands and minds right at the beginning of class.
