Graphic organizers help both teachers and students to organize new and old information. The are great aids in helping students to learn how to organize and also for helping them retain new information. Graphic organizers can be as helpful and framed as the teacher desires or can be a relatively blank template for the students to fill in as they listen along. Graphic organizers can also help students see patterns in their learning. If a teacher uses the same graphic organizer for an entire year and refers to it constantly, it is likely that the students will be able to make references to that both mentally and in their daily work. It is important to remember that as useful and helpful as visual organization is, overusing graphic organizers can be detrimental. This is a case of when, not if- but the timing and implementation of these aids must be tasteful in order to be constructive.

Flow Chart
The chart below is a generic chart I will use it for each artist we learn about so students can expect what they will need to know and soon it will be second nature to think about the questions asked when they hear about a new artist.

Word Cloud
Using wordle.com I created a word cloud with many words that might be part of a work of art. This seemingly chaotic graphic organizer would be a fun and semi-challenging way to ask students to search and highlight/circle words that they have used or see in their own art. It would be used to answer the question "What is unique about my art?"

Box Thoughts (2.0)
Another made-up version of a graphic organizer designed to help students learn and think deeper. This graphic organizer is in regard to the essential question: What determines value (in art)?

Timeline
The timeline can be manipulated an various ways to fit the lesson. This timeline is meant to show a quick recap of art throughout time. It helps illustrate: How has art changed throughout time? The space left is designed for students to write an artists who represents that time period and adjectives that describe the art movement.

Column Organizer
This graphic organizer is a simple format divided into three columns to separate three different ways that art affects people. This organizer in particular discusses propaganda/media, religious art, and narrative art.

Compartments Organizer
This simple three-box organizer helps our brains see two different entities and then compare them with each other. This organizer would be a great one for using common core in the class. It would involve each student (alone or in groups) doing a mini-research project on a culture of their choice and seeing how that culture's art reflects that culture's values. This graphic organizer is good particularly for brainstorming.

T-Chart
T-charts are simple and can be created in multiple formats. I filled out half of the T-chart or my students. This graphic organizer helps students to see how problem solving it part of creating art and how using that side of their brain is an exercise to help that part of the brain grow stronger. This chart can also be use for each art piece we do (though I wouldn't use it that much). It helps students work step by step and see assess what they need to do, could do, and figure out if they are done.
